Newman Theological College announces recipients of the Saints Newman and Therese Scholarship.

On this Feast Day of St. Therese of Lisieux, Newman Theological College is happy to announce Rachel Vandermeer and Lauren Lashyn as the recipients of the Saints Newman and Therese Scholarship. Recipients are awarded $5000 towards their tuition for the Bachelor of Arts in Catholic Studies.

The Saints Newman and Therese Scholarship is established specifically for alumni of the 9-month faith formation program at St. Therese Institute of Faith and Mission in Bruno, SK.

“We were excited to launch a collaboration with St. Therese Institute in Bruno this year,” said Dr. Francis Fast, Director of the Bachelor of Arts in Catholic Studies. “We are pleased to offer scholarships to two very deserving students from the institution.

The Saints Newman and Therese Scholarship was offered for the 2022/23 academic year.

“Newman and Therese: what a beautiful pair of saints we honour!” said Dr. Ryan Topping, Director of the Benedict XVI Institute. “This new scholarship signifies the high regard we at NTC have for the spiritual and academic excellence that St. Therese in Bruno, SK, fosters among its students.”

While NTC received many excellent applications, two recipients were selected on the basis of financial need, academic excellence, and their written response to the question, “How will you continue to live out the Little Way at Newman Theological College?”

Newman Theological College is delighted to congratulate Rachel Vandermeer and Lauren Lashyn as this year’s recipients.

Rachel Vandermeer is from Woodstock, Ontario and attended St. Therese for three years (2019-2022). “After attending St. Therese Institute and studying the example of the Little Flower, I understand that my mission is found exactly at NTC; in every single moment I have there,” said Vandermeer. “St. Therese became the patroness of missions from a convent because she understood that God does not waste anything. There is no reading, no essay, no assignment that God is not able to use for his glory if it is done with love.”

Lauren Lashyn is from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and attended St. Therese for two years (2020-22). “As I move beyond the boundary of St. Therese Institute, I realize that continuing to follow the Little Way will be a crucial factor in a smooth transition to wherever life may lead,” said Lashyn. “I look forward to entering this next phase of post-secondary education, and to journeying alongside fellow students as we make an intentional effort to evolve into a close-knit community, supporting one another through prayer, academics, and fellowship on our pilgrimage toward Heaven.”

Newman Theological College and the Benedict XVI Institute are supported by many generous donors and organizations which make these scholarships possible, including the recent grant from the Lily Endowment. The $5000 scholarships will cover almost two-thirds of tuition for the recipients’ first year of study.

“Thank you so much for your generosity which has allowed me to follow God’s call and continue my education at NTC,” said Vandermeer. “Growing in my understanding of Christ is one of the most foundational parts of my life, and I am so excited to be able to pursue that in the coming years. Thank you for your support!”

“I am very honored to have been selected as one of the recipients of the Saints Newman and Therese Scholarship,” said Lashyn. “I am most grateful for the generous financial support received, which will assist in my transition this fall. Please keep me in your prayers and be assured of mine for you as I journey forward in my academic pursuits.”

Newman Theological College was delighted to welcome both recipients in September as they began their first year in NTC’s newest program, the Bachelor of Arts in Catholic Studies. The recipients are among eight St. Therese alumni currently studying at NTC.

“Today we celebrate the Feast Day of St. Therese of Lisieux, as both a great saint and a Doctor of the Church,” said Dr. Jason West, President of Newman Theological College. "We are pleased to welcome students from St. Therese Institute as they continue to walk the Little Way at our college.”
