Aboriginal Studies

Increasingly Newman College graduates are finding themselves in ministry situations in Western and Northern Canada where they are being asked to minister with First Nations, Metis and Inuit peoples.  This may be in Aboriginal communities or in urban settings in parishes, schools and chaplaincies in health care or corrections institutions.

Newman College is developing new credit course and non-credit seminar initiatives related to ministry with Aboriginal peoples.   Newman is continuing its sponsorship of the Directions in Aboriginal Ministry summer program in partnership with the Building Bridges program of the Western Bishops.  New initiatives include noon-hour seminar series “Medicine Wheel Teachings - Stories and Journeys from Canadian Catholic Aboriginal Communities” and "The Time after the TRC: Moving towards Right Relations and Mutual Respect", and credit courses on interculturation and ministry in Aboriginal community settings.
