The Practice of Pastoral Care will provide participants with the practical elements required to assist those that are sick, suffering, or dying from an illness.

 

GENERAL COURSE OBJECTIVES:

  • Learn about the Pastoral Care of the Sick.
  • Understand Visits to the Sick or the Sick Child.
  • Consider Communion of the Sick and Anointing of the Sick.
  • Learn about the Celebration of Viaticum, the Commendation of the Dying and Prayers for the Dead.
  • Understand the Rites for Exceptional Circumstances.
  • Consider the Readings, Responses and Verses from Sacred Scripture.

 

COURSE STRUCTURE AND HIGHLIGHTS:

Week 1: The Pastoral Care of the Sick

  • Understand the Apostolic Constitution of the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick.
  • Reflect on the Pastoral Care of the Sick.

Week 2: Visits to the Sick

  • Understand the Theology of Visiting the Sick.
  • Consider the Rites when Visiting the Sick or the Sick Child.
  • Understand the Rites of Communion for the Sick.
  • Reflect on the Rites of Anointing of the Sick.
  • Reflect on the Celebration of Viaticum.
  • Understand the Commendation of the Dying and Prayers for the Dead.

ASSESSMENT:

The Practice of Pastoral Care consists of ten lessons and ten assignments, with each assignment weighted at 10% (percent) of the total grade.

  • You must have Internet access. A high speed connection, either ADSL or cable, is recommended.
  • You should know how to use a web browser to navigate the web to locate educational resources and download files.
  • You will need the files management skills necessary to create directories, to save files and to retrieve files.
