The Old Testament will introduce participants to the three worlds of historical background, literary features, and interpretive possibilities of the Old Testament; survey the major divisions of the Bible; and present examples of how to interpret the Bible using contemporary methodologies.

 

GENERAL COURSE OBJECTIVES:

  • The Pentateuch.
  • The Historical Books.
  • The Wisdom Books.
  • The Prophets.

 

COURSE STRUCTURE AND HIGHLIGHTS:

Week 1: Old Testament Introduction

  • Learn about the Historical Context of Israel.
  • Consider the Geography, Climate and Political and Religious Situation of Palestine.
  • Understand the Jewish Scriptures and the Christian Old Testament.

Week 2: The Pentateuch

  • Learn about the Sources of the Pentateuch.
  • Understand the Mythical Prehistory, Ancestral Narratives, and the Law of the Pentateuch.
  • Learn about the Deuteronomistic History and the Narrative of the History Books.
  • Consider Judges and the Historical Novels.
  • Learn about the Wisdom Books and Writings.
  • Consider the Wisdom Writings of Job, the Psalms, and Proverbs.

Week 3: The Historical Books

Week 4: The Wisdom Books

Week 5: The Prophets.

  • Learn about the Prophets and the History of Prophecy in Israel.
  • Consider the Prophets Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Daniel.

ASSESSMENT:

The Old Testament consists of ten lessons and ten assignments, with each assignment weighted at 10% (percent) of the total grade.
