Newman Theological College Bursaries

NTC administers a number of bursaries established to assist students to pay their tuition fees. NTC bursaries are awarded for tuition only on the basis of the following criteria: financial need, involvement in the NTC community (current students) and involvement in the Christian community (new and continuing students), qualities of leadership, and academic performance. Application Forms are available at www.newman.edu or from the Student Services foyer and must be submitted by July 26th for the upcoming academic year to the Dean of Students. In August the Bursary Committee reviews all completed applications and determines the amount of funds to be distributed. Late applicants are to contact the Dean of Students for more information.

Bursaries for 2013-2014

Newman Theological College offers bursaries to new and continuing students enrolled in degree programs. Newman Theological College bursaries are awarded (for tuition only) on the basis of the following four criteria:

  • Academic performance

Established in 2012 by Aimé And Lucille Magnan to encourage people to further their education as seminarians, lay ministers or teachers.

 

Any program at Newman Theological College. Full-time or part-time student.

Archbishop Anthony Jordan

 

Established in 1985 to honor Archbishop Anthony Jordan, who was a strong promoter of theological education for the laity.  The fund was established by the Archdiocese of Edmonton under the leadership of the Most Rev. Joseph N. MacNeil.

Full time lay students from the Archdiocese of Edmonton enrolled in any program who are serving and plan to continue in their service in this community.

Basilian Human Development Bursary   

 

Established in 2004 by the Basilian Office for Social Justice for students from Northern Canadian dioceses enrolled in a distance education course at Newman Theological College.

Students enrolled in any distance education course at Newman Theological College. Full-time or part-time student living in a Northern Canadian diocese.

Carolyn Klimchuk
Memorial

 

Established in the memory of Carolyn Klimchuk by her husband, Mel, in 1990.  Carolyn was a teacher in the Edmonton Catholic School system and an alumna of NTC. She had a love of education and was committed to theological education, especially for women.

Established in 1998 by the Superintendents of East Central Alberta, Elk Island, and
St. Thomas Aquinas Schools Divisions.

Full or part-time teachers enrolled in the G.C.C.S.A. or M.R.E. programs who are employed by the participating school divisions.

Cecilia I. Johnstone
Bursary Fund

 

Established in 2006 as a lasting legacy to the former Chancellor, Cecilia I. Johnstone by her mother, Mrs. Anne Johnstone.

This fund provides assistance to new female lay students enrolled in the B.Th., M.T.S., M.Div. or M.Th. program who are in financial need, studying for the Archdiocese of Edmonton and whose intention is to serve in full time ministry upon graduation.
 

D’Youville
Scholarship

 

 

Established by an anonymous donor as a reflection of the significant contributions of the Sisters of Charity of Montreal (Grey Nuns) in Western Canada.

Female lay student enrolled in any program at NTC. Preference is given to a student with full-time status.

Memorial

 

Established in 1990 by the Sisters of
St. Joseph, St. John’s Convent, Edmonton.

Full or part- time lay students of any religious denomination enrolled in any program at NTC. Preference is given to female students.

Father Benedict
Hogan, O.Carm.
Bursary Fund

 

Established in 2005 by Teresa Kellendonk, a graduate of the Master of Divinity program to honour Fr. Benedict Hogan, O.Carm. who encouraged her to study at NTC.

 

Full or part-time lay students enrolled in the B.Th. or M.Div. programs.  Bursaries are awarded based on financial need.

Kingston Memorial 

Established in 1983 through the efforts of Rev. Wilf Murchland, CSC, past President of NTC. The bursary was set up as a memorial to his confrere, Rev. Paul Kingston, CSC. Rev. Kingston was pastor of Sacred Heart Parish in Red Deer, and Vice-Chair of NTC’s Board of Governors.

Full-time student enrolled in any program at NTC.

Father Kenneth
Kearns 

Established by Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish in Sherwood Park, Alberta, in 1990, in memory of Fr. Kenneth Kearns.

Full or part-time lay student enrolled in any program at NTC who is active in parishes within the Archdiocese of Edmonton.

John Francis &
Ellen Victoria
Meagher Bursary      

Established in 2004 through the estate of sisters Florence and Mary Meagher.  The “John Francis and Ellen Victoria Meagher Bursary” was created to assist NTC students who are in financial need with their education in Thomistic philosophy or other such Catholic philosophers.

Awarded annually to students in
financial need to assist them in
continuing their education in Thomistic philosophy or other such Catholic philosophers.

The Military &
Hospitaller Order of St. Lazarus Jerusalem Msgr. William Irwin Bursary in Ecumenical Studies

Established in 2000 by the Edmonton
Commandery of The Military and Hospitaller Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem. This fund recognizes the Order’s commitment to promoting ecumenical activities in Canada.

Full or part-time student enrolled in any program at NTC, whose primary interest is in ecumenical studies.

Monsignor Walter P. Fitzgerald and Alumni Scholarship

Established in 1982 by the NTC Alumni Association.

Full or part-time student enrolled in any Religious Education program at NTC.

Newman Theological College Scholarship

Established in 1997 by Rocky and Jean Forest. Jean served as Vice-Chair of the Board of Governors.

Full or part-time lay student enrolled in any program at NTC.

Pauline Plumbtree
Memorial Scholarship

Established in 1985 in memory of the late Pauline Plumbtree, a former student in the Diploma in Theological Studies (Dip.T.S.)
program at NTC. This fund was established by Pauline’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. D.W. Plumbtree.

Full or part-time student enrolled in any program at NTC who intends to use their education to serve the Catholic Church and community.

 

Robert Spence
Memorial Scholarship Fund

 

Established in 2003 in memory of Robert Spence. Mr. Spence operated a well-known retail shoe business in Calgary and along with his wife Annette was very active in the Francophone community and in Ste. Famille Roman Catholic Parish. The scholarship was established by his widow to assist students who demonstrate financial need.

The recipients must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents.

Sister Annata
Brockman Bursary Fund

Established in 2005 to honour Sr. Annata Brockman on her retirement.

Full or part-time lay students from the Archdiocese of Edmonton in any program at NTC leading to a certificate, diploma, or degree in Theology or Religious Education.

Sisters of Assumption Bursary Fund

Established in 1982 by the Sisters of Assumption. The bursary is allocated for the B.Th. and the M.Div. programs.

Full or part-time female lay students enrolled in the B.Th. or M.Div. programs.  Bursaries are awarded based on financial need.

Society of The Sacred Heart

 

Full or part-time lay woman.

St. Andrew’s Parish Scholarship

Established in 1984 by the parish
community of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Edmonton.

Full or part-time lay students from the Archdiocese of Edmonton enrolled in any program at NTC.

St. Francis of Assisi Parish Bursary Fund

 

Established in 2005 by St. Francis of Assisi Parish.

Full or part-time lay students studying for the Archdiocese of Edmonton enrolled in any NTC program which trains lay people for leadership in the Catholic Church.  Bursaries are awarded based on financial need.

Scholarship

Established in 1988 by the School Sisters of Notre Dame.

Full-time student enrolled in any program at NTC.

Van de
Walle-Prefontaine Scholarship

 

Established in 2004 by the Van de
Walle-Prefontaine family on the occasion of Fern (Prefontaine) and Walter’s 50th
Wedding Anniversary. Fern always
encouraged a deeper understanding of one’s faith. Walter touched the lives of many individuals with his public service, which included seven years as a Board Director of the Foundation of Newman Theological College and St. Joseph Seminary.
