Brittney White

2010 Sr. Anne Honig Award Recipient

The Anne Honing Service Award is given annually to a student who has shown exemplary dedication and service to Newman Theological College community. The recipient of this award is a student who has fostered the sense of community spirit in the college and has been an all around leader in the NTC community.

The Newman Theological College Students Association in conjunction with the Sisters of Charity of St. Louis, established the Sr. Anne Honig Award in 1997 to commemorate the life and service of Sr. Anne Honig, a former student who died in a tragic car accident shortly after completing her studies at Newman.

Brittney White, Sr. Pat Derbyshire, Sr. Aldona Ewasko, Sr. Mary Spence

This year’s recipient of the Sr. Anne Honig Award, Brittney White is a person with boundless energy and enthusiasm who cares passionately about people, especially those who are suffering.  Brittney served on the Newman Theological College Student Council as the Vice President of Spiritual Life and Social Justice and in that capacity organized a number of events for the Newman College Community.

Through Brittney’s concern and insistence NTC student council introduced Fair Trade Coffee to the College. She organised a liturgy and raised funds to assist those affected by the floods in the Philippines, including the family of one of our students. She also organized a prayer chain, and a liturgy to pray for the people of Haiti. Brittney coordinated the 'Justice January' campaign to gather hygiene products for the Youth Emergency Shelter and to raise awareness of homeless youth. She also organized an evening for students to help sort Christmas donations at the Mustard Seed Church. Just a few weeks ago Brittney arranged to have a speaker from Caritas Honduras address to the NTC student body on the work of Development and Peace. She also fostered a sense of community by organizing potluck lunches at the conclusion of many of the events she arranged.

On behalf of all the students at NTC we would like to thank Brittney for all she’s done to lead and facilitate a spirit of caring and community at Newman Theological College.

News Release April 9, 2010
New Leadership at Newman Theological College

The Board of Governors of Newman Theological College has announced the appointment of a new College President to replace Dr. M. Bryn Kulmatycki, whose five-year contract was to end this July. By mutual agreement, Dr. Kulmatycki was released from his contract on March 30, 2010.
At the April 7th board meeting, the Governors passed a motion extending their “deepest appreciation and gratitude to Bryn for the excellent manner in which he has fulfilled his position as President.” A farewell celebration is being planned to pay tribute to Dr. Kulmatycki and his many contributions to Newman Theological College.
Rev. Shayne Craig, PSS, has been appointed to replace Dr. Kulmatycki for a two-year term as President of the College, effective immediately. Father Shayne will also continue in his current role as Rector of St. Joseph Seminary, a post he has held since 2005.
Archbishop Richard Smith, chair of the Board of Governors, said the decision to have one person perform the duties of President and Rector follows a detailed review of governance, financing and operations at Newman. It also fits well with the aim to streamline administration and amalgamate services on the Catholic Pastoral Centre campus, where the new college and seminary buildings are being constructed.
“With his years of experience at the seminary and the college, Father Shayne has a deep understanding of their missions of priestly and lay formation,” said Archbishop Smith. “I am confident that he will ensure they both continue to serve and to grow.”
The Archdiocese of Edmonton will provide the appropriate administrative support to assist the new president, he said.
Father Shayne said he is looking forward to leading the college as it moves to a new site and toward a new vision of its mission.
“I think this shows that the seminary and the college are indeed in partnership in the formation of priests and lay people,” he said. “I look forward to redeveloping our programs of formation for all the various ministries in the service of the Church and our mission in the world.”
Newman Theological College is an accredited academic institution dedicated to the study of theology and related disciplines. It currently offers graduate-level programs and classes in theology and religious education. The college is owned by the Catholic Archdiocese of Edmonton, but its programs are open to all women and  men who have the necessary prerequisites.

Heavenly Father,

We thank you for the gifts you graciously give us.
Through our communion with your Son, may we have the strength and courage to use these gifts boldly and joyfully for your glory.

You have granted to our Archdiocese the unique opportunity to serve the Church by constructing the new St. Joseph Seminary and Newman Theological College.  We pray for the Holy Spirit’s gifts of wisdom and knowledge as we work to ensure the future of these institutions of priestly and lay formation.

May the hearts of our people be fully open to your call.  Grant an increase of vocations to the priesthood and religious life.  Help our lay people to respond to your call to serve the Church and announce the Gospel to our world.

We make this prayer through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, our Cornerstone of Faith.

Amen.
